Volunteer Feature: Jim!

At Pitney Meadows Community Farm, we’re deeply grateful for the amazing individuals who give their time, energy, and heart to our mission. Our Volunteer Feature is our way of recognizing the dedicated community members who help our farm thrive. We're excited to shine a light on Jim, our next Volunteer Feature!

If you’ve ever stopped by the Pitney Meadows Farm Stand on a Wednesday morning, chances are you’ve been warmly welcomed by Jim! With a friendly smile and an easygoing conversation about everything from local produce to Saratoga Springs itself, Jim is a bright spot in the week for many visitors!

Jim’s journey with Pitney Meadows began several years ago with a Community Garden plot in the early days of the Community Garden. “My wife, Yancy, really got into it,” he recalls. “She loves experimenting! Last year we grew purple sweet potatoes!”

When Jim retired, he knew he wanted to stay active and involved in the community. “To be honest,” he laughs, “I didn’t want to weed anymore… my knees weren’t having it! But I enjoy people, and I love talking up the Farm. Volunteering in the Farm Stand just made sense.”

And he’s a natural. Whether it’s guiding visitors, chatting about the farm’s offerings, or helping folks feel at home, Jim brings warmth and curiosity to every one of his volunteer shifts. “You can read people’s faces,” he says. “Some want a quick hello, others want to talk and I love both. I get to meet people from all over, and I feel like I’m making a small, positive impact.”

One memorable moment? “A woman came in and looked at me and said, ‘It’s terrible that you have to be here to prevent stealing.”  I told her, “No, I’m here to just help people and welcome them, not to police anything. And then, while she was checking out, two different folks came up and we had great conversations. She was one of them. It reminded me why I’m really here… to create a welcoming space.”

To Jim, Pitney Meadows is more than a farm; it’s a hub for connection, growth, and support. “It’s a safe place, a peaceful place. There’s no politics or judgments, just people growing food, learning, and helping each other. And it’s such an important resource. I know how much produce goes out to organizations that serve people in need. That’s meaningful.”

When asked what he’d say to someone thinking about joining the community at Pitney Meadows Community Farm, Jim doesn't hesitate: “Check it out! There’s something for everyone… whether it’s walking the trails, growing your own food, or visiting the Farm Stand. It’s low-stress, welcoming, and it just feels good to be a part of it.”

And finally, the fun question: if Jim were a plant, what would he be?

His answer? “I’d be a tomato,” he says with a grin. “Sometimes a fruit, sometimes a vegetable… into everything, with everybody. Plus, I just really like tomatoes.”

Thank you, Jim, for your time, your stories, and all the heart you bring to Pitney Meadows every week. We’re so grateful you’re part of our community! Next time you make a stop at the Farm Stand and you happen to run into Jim, be sure to say hello!
